NATO forces killed at least 12 suspected militants in south—eastern Paktia province on Saturday, officials said.

“Two insurgents were shot dead in Zurmat district when they were trying to plant a roadside bomb” Dastagir Rostamyar, deputy chief of police zone told the German Press Agency dpa.

The rebels were initially injured in their own roadside blast.

NATO air forces then killed ten other militants, who came to help their friends, he said.

“Those killed were all Taliban fighters,” the police zone deputy chief said.

Separately, the Interior Ministry in a statement said that one civilian was killed and five others were wounded when a bomb exploded in the southern city of Kandahar on Friday.

Also, one insurgent was killed and two others were wounded when they were trying to plant a bomb in bridge in southern province of Zabul province on Friday, the ministry said.

Roadside bombs are a favourite weapon in the hands of militant groups to inflict a maximum number of casualties among the foreign soldiers based in Afghanistan.
