A convoy transporting supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan was attacked by militants in Pakistan’s South-western Balochistan province today, killing one person and injuring two others.
The militants opened fire at the convoy in Bolan district and then torched five oil tankers.
The tankers were destroyed and a driver was killed in the attack. Two other drivers were injured, police officials said.
Police and law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area but the attackers managed to flee. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Supplies shipped to the port city of Karachi are transported by convoys to Afghanistan.
In the past, militants have targeted convoys in the Khyber tribal region in the country’s northwest and on a route linking Karachi to Quetta, the capital of Balochistan.
Today’s attack was the first one on a route linking Sukkur in Sindh province to Quetta.
In previous attacks, militants have destroyed hundreds of tankers and containers ferrying supplies to US and NATO forces in Afghanistan.
