An Egyptian court Thursday cleared the interior minister of former president Hosny Mubarak of graft charges, the latest acquittal in cases involving officials from the Mubarak regime.
Habib al-Adli was handed a 12-year prison sentence and ordered to pay a fine of 9.3 million Egyptian pounds (1.3 million dollars) in May 2011 after being convicted of abusing his powers to make illegal gains.
An appeals court later overturned the verdict and ordered a retrial.
Al-Adli served as interior minister for 14 years until Mubarak sacked him at the peak of a 2011 uprising that eventually forced the longtime president out of power.
Human rights groups accuse the ex-minister of serious abuses.
Al-Adli faces three other trials related to corruption, waste of public money and involvement in protester deaths during the anti-Mubarak uprising.
