Police in central France have shot dead a man who was shouting “God is great” in Arabic while trying to attack them with a knife, said reports.

Three police officers have been injured by the man in France’s Joue-les-Tours station near the city of Tours before he was shot dead, reported BBC.

A source close to the investigation said that the assailant was a Burundi-born French national with a criminal record.

Christophe Crepin, a member of France’s police union said that the attacker had a really long knife and that he was banging on the fittings of the door and tried to stab the police officers when they opened the door to see what he was doing.

According to reports, the attacker’s brother is believed to have expressed a desire to travel to Syria.
