In an apparent case of suicide, a 30-year-old man, believed to be an Indian, on Wednesday fell to death from the 147th floor of Burj Khalifa, world's tallest tower, police here said.
The man in his early thirties, who is yet to be identified, jumped from an air vent from the 147th floor and landed on a terrace of the tower's 108th floor, the police said.
The building has over 160 storeys.
“The police operations room received a call about a suicide at the Burj Khalifa today [Wednesday]. Criminal Investigation Department teams were immediately dispatched,” the police said.
This is the first recorded suicide since the building was completed last year. After he jumped, the man hit the metal barriers of the tower, causing some damage to the structure.
Initial investigations showed that the man worked in a company inside the building. Unconfirmed reports said the man had requested a holiday but it was refused.
In a statement, Emaar Properties, developer of the tower said the incident occurred earlier in the day.
“Around 9 a.m., an incident was reported at the Burj Khalifa site. The authorities concerned have confirmed that it was a suicide, and we are awaiting the final report,” said the statement.
The police and paramedics arrived within few minutes of the incident but could not resuscitate him. The mangled remains of his body were sent to the forensic department.
