Maldives President in Sri Lanka

August 16, 2011 09:04 pm | Updated 09:05 pm IST - COLOMBO:

Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday morning on a two-day visit.

Mr. Nasheed would meet Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other senior government officials and hold discussions on ways to further strengthen the close bilateral relations, said the Maldivian President's office in a release. “Discussions will also be held on important issues noted by both the countries, and matters to be discussed at the SAARC Summit to be held in November this year,” it added.

Officials in Sri Lanka said Mr. Nasheed left for Hambantota to have a first-hand experience of the change in landscape and also to catch a part of the third one-day international cricket match between Sri Lanka and Australia.

Mr. Nasheed shares a deep personal bond with Mr. Rajapaksa. Mr.Nasheed was in Sri Lanka before he became President, at a time when the Maldivian Police were on the lookout for him.
