Malala Yousafzai has undergone surgery to repair her skull which was badly damaged when the teenaged Pakistani schoolgirl was shot in the head by a militant last October.

Doctors treating her at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital said they were "very pleased" with the operation which involved fitting a titanium plate into the missing part of her skull.

During the five-hour procedure on Saturday a small electronic device was also implanted into her left ear to help her regain hearing which she lost after the attack.

A spokesperson said Malala was recovering well. She was awake and talking to doctors and her family members.

Dr Dave Rosser, medical director of the hospital, said her recovery was a "a testament to her strength and desire to get better".
