Magnitude-6.1 quake rattles Indonesian island

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 has struck Indonesia’s North Maluku province. There have been no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning has been issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Saturday’s quake was centred near Obi island at a depth of about 53 km.

The area is some 2,400 km east of Jakarta.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Geophysics and Climate Agency measured the quake at 6.4 magnitude.

Indonesia rests on a series of fault lines that make the archipelago nation one of the most earthquake-prone. A quake last year killed more than 1,000 people on Sumatra. Another off Indonesia’s coast caused the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 230,000.
