Magnitude 6.4 earthquake strikes near Tonga

A strong magnitude 6.4 earthquake has struck at sea northwest of Tonga in the South Pacific. There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning has been issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Thursday’s quake was centred 272 miles (438 kilometres) northwest of the Tongan town of Neiafu at a depth of 14 miles (23 kilometers).

Earthquakes are common in the South Pacific.
