Magnitude 5.4 quake off western Greece

August 22, 2010 08:32 pm | Updated 08:32 pm IST - ATHENS

The Athens Geodynamic Institute says a moderate magnitude 5.4 earthquake has truck off the coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos.

The quake hit at 1-23 pm (3.53 pm IST), 65 km from the island.

Firefighters say no damage has been reported, noting that Zakynthos’ buildings have been built under especially strict standards following a damaging series of earthquakes in 1953.

Earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 and over are fairly common in Greece.
