A magnitude 5.4 earthquake has struck a mountainous region of western China near the border with Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 8.32 p.m. (12.32 GMT) on Friday. Its epicentre was located 73 kilometres west of the city of Kashgar in the Xinjiang region.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in the remote, lightly populated region.
China’s earthquake monitoring centre put the magnitude of the quake lower at 5.0.
