Landslide destroys 100 houses in Philippines

August 09, 2011 09:36 am | Updated 09:36 am IST - SUBIC

Heavy rains have triggered a landslide that destroyed about 100 houses in a mountainside village west of Manila.

Mayor Jefferson Khonghun says no injuries were reported as the 300 or so villagers had fled the area in time.

Khonghun says he had posted guards to watch conditions in Asinan village near his town of Subic after 100 homes were wiped out last week by cascades of rock, debris and rainwater.

Dozens of workers are using bulldozers and backhoes to dig a dike to protect another nearby community with about 300 houses.

The mayor said Tuesday the landslides are the result of a recent quake that opened a crack that then filled with rainwater near the mountaintop.
