Kofi Annan resigns as Syria envoy

Kofi Annan has resigned from his post as the UN-Arab League peace envoy for Syria, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday.

Mr. Annan asked that his mandate not be renewed when it expires August 31.

“I wish to express my deepest gratitude to Mr. Annan for the determined and courageous efforts he has made as the joint special envoy for Syria,” Mr. Ban said.
