Islamic militants attacked Mandera County governor’s convoy, killing three people including two police officers, said a police official on Friday.

The official said gunmen attacked Governor Ali Roba’s convoy about 27 kilometres from Mandera town. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak with the press, said attackers blocked off the last car in the convoy which was heading to Wajir town.

He said two police officers were burned beyond recognition, and a politician was killed. Three civilians were wounded by bullets. Al-Shabab militants from Somalia have claimed responsibility for the attack through their radio station.

Al-Shabab, an Islamic extremist group, has vowed to inflict violent attacks on Kenya because it has contributed troops to the African Union force supporting the government in Somalia.
