Japanese stocks mixed in morning trade

May 18, 2010 08:13 am | Updated 08:13 am IST - Tokyo

Japanese shares were mixed in Tuesday morning trading following overnight gains on Wall Street, while investors remained concerned about debt problems in Europe.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average gained 45.64 points, or 0.45 per cent, to trade at 10,281.4. The broader Topix index was down 1.44 points, or 0.16 per cent, at 918.99.

Tokyo stocks opened higher after Monday’s sharp fall as the euro climbed against the yen. A weaker yen improves overseas earnings when the revenues are repatriated.

On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 92.52—54 yen, up from Monday’s 5 pm quote of 92.00—02 yen.

The euro traded at 1.2381—2385 dollars, up from 1.2271—2272 dollars Monday, and at 114.56—59 yen, up from 112.89—93 yen.
