A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice S. K. Sinha rejected Jamaat-e-Islami leader Kamaruzzaman’s petition on Monday, removing all legal hurdles in carrying out his execution.
“The Appellate Division has rejected the plea, which means the death penalty remains upheld,” Attorney-General Mahbube Alam told journalists.
He said the war crimes convict can now file a mercy petition with the President and the execution will be carried out if that is turned down as well.
As per the jail code, a convict gets seven days’ time to seek presidential mercy after the jail authority receives the death warrant.
Family members of the death row convict met Kamaruzzaman on Monday.
