The National Hurricane Centre says Tropical Storm Irene is maintaining an 80 kmph maximum sustained winds as it nears the U.S.-Canada border.

Forecasters said on Sunday evening that the storm, stripped of hurricane rank hours earlier, was moving north-northeast at 40 kmph. It was located some 30 km south of St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect from Manasquan Inlet, New Jersey, north to Eastport, Maine, including the New York City area, and for the U.S.-Canada border northeastward to Fort Lawrence and for the south coast of Nova Scotia.

Irene is expected to drop below tropical storm strength later Sunday.

Forecasters expect it to reach Canada later Sunday or early Monday.
