Indonesia has admitted that the men seen torturing Papuan villagers in a video uploaded on the internet earlier this week are members of the military

The Indonesian government confirms its soldiers were seen on grisly online videos showing suspected separatists being tortured in Papua province.

Senior Security Minister Djoko Suyanto said on Friday there are preliminary reports of excessive acts by soldiers against those arrested in the easternmost region. He added that a comprehensive investigation of the “unprofessional” behaviour is under way.

He did not specify how many soldiers or which videos, but two that have surfaced recently have sparked public anger.

They show suspected soldiers burning the genitals of one man and running a knife across the neck of another.
