An Indian-origin man and his wife were on Wednesday found murdered in their home in Birmingham, sending shockwaves through the local Indian community.

They were identified as Avtar Singh-Kolar (62), and Carole (58).

Police suspect that they were assaulted and appeared to have died of their injuries.

Superintendent Richard Baker said their bodies were found by their son, a serving police officer of West Midlands force, when he went to the house on Wednesday morning after he was not able to reach them on the phone.

The couple, who had four children and eight grandchildren, had been married for 40 years and were described as a “close-knit, loving family.”

Police said the investigation was still at a preliminary stage and they were keeping an “open mind” about the motive.

“It was obvious from the scene the couple had been assaulted and had more than likely died of their injuries. At 7-15 pm last night a family member spoke to Carole and there were no issues. At 8 this morning their son went round to find the couple dead at the scene,” Mr. Baker said appealing for information that might help in tracking down the couple's killer or killers.

Asked whether it might have been a revenge attack linked to their son's job in the police, he said: “We are looking at that as a possibility but we have no information to suggest it is the case at this stage. We have a full team of experts and forensic scientists at the address. It is very early days and we don't want to miss any opportunity.”
