Indian-origin doctor jailed for death of woman

A doctor of Indian origin has been jailed after being found guilty of gross negligence, leading to the death of a woman patient.

Consultant urologist Sudhanshu Garg (44), of Cottingley, near Bradford, was sentenced to two years, for causing the death of Lisa Quinn (37), a mother of two, by missing “vital opportunities” to investigate her deteriorating condition.

He admitted gross negligence leading to manslaughter.

Sentencing him, the judge said: “Your plea means that your breach of duty was causative of Lisa Quinn's death, and cumulatively it amounts to a disturbing picture of a failure to take action.”

He said that if Garg had performed his duties correctly, “the overwhelming probability is that she could have survived”.

Earlier, the court heard how Ms. Quinn died at Bradford Royal Infirmary on August 25, 2008, three days after she went into the Accident and Emergency Department, suffering from a kidney infection.

The judge was told that Ms. Quinn wasn't given a crucial ultrasound scan until two days after she arrived at the hospital, even as her infection developed into a life-threatening blockage. She eventually got the treatment she needed, but died soon after.
