Indian Navy warships, on an anti-piracy mission, struck success for the fourth time in the last 10 days, with INS Delhi intercepting and disarming a dhow on Wednesday in the Gulf of Aden.
Deployed in the region since mid-July this year, INS Delhi was escorting 6 merchant vessels with 40 Indians among the 147 crew on board.
At about 10 a.m., some 108 km south of the Yemeni coast, the dhow was spotted approaching the formation in the International Recommended Transit Corridor. The craft was intercepted and boarded by a team of marine commandos, Navy spokesperson Commander P.V.S. Satish said here on Thursday.
A cache of arms, including a 7.62 mm rifle, 6 Rocket Propelled Grenades and ammunition was found on board. The dhow was disarmed and the piracy threat cleared.
This was the fourth such action taken by INS Delhi, three being taken in the last four days. Since the Navy started anti-piracy operations in October 2008, this was the 18th attack that was foiled.
