A major extension to one of the largest Hindu temples in Britain built at a cost of 500,000 pounds has been inaugurated in Leicester, which has a large community of Indian origin.
The Indian consul—general in Birmingham C. Gururaj Rao inaugurated the extension at the Geeta Bhavan Temple.
Inaugurating the extension and congratulating the management and devotees of the temple, Mr. Rao said: “Religious buildings are very important for the community.”
The temple was funded and opened by the Hindu Religious and Cultural Society of Leicester, which bought an existing building and converted it to a temple in the 1980s.
Funding for this extension was raised by the congregation.
Temple president Prem Khosla, Mahesh Prasher, secretary of the Hindu Cultural and Religious Society, and Surinder Sharma, national director for equality and human rights with the Department of Health, welcomed Mr. Rao at the temple.
