About 100 demonstrators marched in Hong Kong Sunday to protest against the construction of what has been labelled the world’s most expensive stretch of railway.
Legislators are due to vote Friday on financing for the 26 kilometre high-speed link between Hong Kong and Shenzhen in southern China, at a cost of 8.6 billion US dollars which is scheduled to be completed by 2015.
Opponents say the railway is unnecessary and will decimate rural communities in Hong Kong’s New Territories that it passes through, causing extensive environmental damage.
The government argues the rail link is essential to plug Hong Kong into a nationwide high-speed network that will bring more business and tourism to the former British colony.
