Heywood’s mother asks for compensation

August 12, 2013 11:11 pm | Updated December 04, 2021 11:41 pm IST - BEIJING:

The mother of British businessman Neil Heywood, whose murder by the wife of former Politburo member Bo Xilai triggered the biggest Chinese political scandal in decades, on Monday called on authorities to provide financial compensation to the family and bring “closure” to their “nightmare”.

Ms. Heywood, in a statement, said she was “surprised and disappointed” that “repeated discreet approaches” to Chinese authorities had not yielded any response, even as Heywood’s widow and two young children faced insecurity with “no financial provision for their future”. Gu Kailai, Mr. Bo’s wife, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, likely to be commuted to a lengthy prison term, for Heywood’s murder. Mr. Bo is expected to go on trial later this month.
