At least seven security personnel on a rescue mission along the Chenab river in Gujrat were killed by terrorists on Monday morning. The soldiers had been camping in the area for the last few weeks in search for a pilot who went missing in an air crash.
The motorcycle-borne assailants attacked the camp early in the morning from a bridge. Besides soldiers, the dead included a policeman. Five others were injured in the attack for which no organization had taken responsibility till late in the evening.
Terrorists attacking security personnel is almost routine in the tribal areas and other parts of north-west Pakistan but such a strike has taken place in the heart of the country after a long time. But the attack has not taken security analysts by surprise as many have long maintained that jihadi outfits have made deep inroads into the body politic of Punjab.
