Britain’s Green Party made an historic breakthrough in the general election Friday when its leader, Caroline Lucas, became the first member of parliament (MP) in London.
Ms. Lucas, 49, who has been a member of the European parliament (MEP) for 10 years, won her Westminster seat in Brighton, the spa town in southern Britain, defeating the Labour candidate.
“Thank you so much for putting the politics of hope above the politics of fear and I pledge that I will do my very best to do you proud. For once the word historic fits the bill,” she said.
Britain’s first-past-the-post electoral system is heavily weighted against smaller parties.
