Germany’s top security official says it isn’t yet time to scale down heightened security measures he ordered a month ago amid fears of an increased threat from Islamic extremists.
Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere was quoted on Saturday as telling the weekly Der Spiegel- “There is still no reason to give the all-clear and it also would be tactically wrong to name a time now.”
Mr. De Maiziere ordered increased security on November 17. Since then there has been a beefed-up police presence in railway stations, airports and other public places.
Though Germany has escaped any major terrorist attacks like the Madrid train bombings of 2004 and the London attacks of 2005, at least two major plots have been thwarted or failed in recent years.
