German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has expressed his sympathy to India after the crash of an Air India aircraft in Mangalore, the Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

Mr. Westerwelle — currently in Lebanon at the start of a Mideast tour — sent a telegram to his Indian counterpart S.M. Krishna saying “I was dismayed to hear the news about the accident of an Air India plane in Mangalore, which cost so many people’s lives.

“Allow me to express my deeply felt sympathy to you and the victims’ families and dependents, as well as the hope that the survivors recover soon,” Mr. Westerwelle added.

Flight IX—812 from Dubai to Mangalore was carrying 160 passengers and six crew members, when it overshot the runway upon landing and caught fire, crashing into a forested gorge.
