Doctors in Germany said on Friday they had successfully removed a 21-kilogramme tumour from a 71-year-old man.

The doctors discovered the giant lump after the man had complained that her stomach was steadily expanding.

The tumour had a diameter of 37 centimetres, said Rigo Voigt, the physician who led the three-hour operation at a hospital in Altenburg, in Germany’s south-east.

“Even at university cancer centres a tumour of such a size is a rarity,” said Mr. Voigt, adding that the patient was well and had now left the hospital.
