A great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi has been elected to a State Assembly in the United Stated during the general elections held on November 6.

Shanti Gandhi, 72, contesting as a Republican Party candidate, defeated his Democratic rival Theodore “Ted” Ensley by nine percentage point for the Kansas’s 52nd Assembly District.

He is son of late Saraswati Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson - the late Kanti Lal.

Gandhi, a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon retired in 2010 from Stormont-Vail Hospital at Topeka City in the Kansas State, received 6,413 votes against Ensley’s 5,357 in the elections held on Tuesday for the State’s, according to the results declared by the Kansas Secretary of State.

He arrived in the US in 1967 as a medical graduate from University of Bombay.

It is proud to note that Gandhi:s great grand son shanti Gandhi, has become an american citizena and aldo won in the election.Unless, one settle in Us and also become a loyal citizen ,this isnot possible.See the differenc between that Gandhi in US and our Gandhi in India.Pepole in India has to awake to ensure they elect proper persons in the ensuringn election. The BJP also has to put his true Indian candidate to be the next primer, instead of contesting for power.

"He is son of late Saraswati Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson - the late Kanti Lal" - Why so convoluted?
Why not simply "He is son of late Kanti Lal - Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson"

Gandhi lived his life for poor people but Gandhi's grand son elected on behalf of the party for rich people!

I am not surprised that Shanti Gandhi was elected to the state assembly
in Kansas. That he is Mahatma Gandhi's great grandson, is mere
coincidence. Anyone who stood on a republican ticket would have won.

Kansas is one of the "red states", from the bible belt in the midwest,
that has always favored a republican to a democrat.
