France asks media not to broadcast attack video

March 27, 2012 03:32 pm | Updated 03:32 pm IST - PARIS

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has asked any TV station with footage of the attacks in southwestern France not to broadcast it.

Al-Jazeera said earlier Tuesday that it had received video footage that appears to show the attacks on soldiers and a Jewish school, including the cries of the victims and the voice of the perpetrator.

Paris bureau chief Zied Tarrouche said the images were contained on a USB key sent with a letter to the Qatar—based television station.

Mr. Tarrouche said the station was still deciding whether to show the footage.

Police traced the attacks to 23-year-old Frenchman Mohamed Merah who was killed after a more than 30—hour standoff with police at his apartment building.
