A military helicopter caught fire mid-air and crashed into Indus river today killing all four people on board, including a provincial chief of the Pakistan Rangers, a senior official said.

Maj. Gen. Muhammad Nawaz, the Director General of the Pakistan Rangers in Punjab, was among the four persons on board the helicopter.

“The helicopter crashed into the Indus River. There were four people on board, including the director general of the Punjab Rangers, Major General Mohammad Nawaz,” Dunya TV quoted military spokesperson Major Farooq Feroz as saying.

“There are no reports of any survivors,” he added.

The helicopter had taken off from Dera Ghazi Khan and was headed towards Multan.

Rescue teams were sent to the crash site in Layyah, 400 km from Lahore.

Meanwhile, Geo News reported that rescue workers have recovered two bodies from crash site.

Last month, a Pakistan Army helicopter had crashed near Haripur in Punjab during a routine flight after developing technical problems.

A junior commissioned officer was killed and four others were injured in that incident.
