Dick Francis, the former jockey who rode Devon Loch in the 1956 Grand National when the horse fell near the finish line when well ahead of the field, has died. He was 89.

Francis, whose death was announced on Sunday by his son Felix, was also a best-selling novelist.

Frances won more than 350 races but is best known for when Devon Loch, which was owned by Queen Mother Elizabeth, appeared to try to jump a phantom fence 50m from the finish line and fell.
