Officials say floods triggered by heavy rains have killed three people and left three others missing in central Vietnam.

Disaster official Tran Duc Thinh says some 14,000 villagers have been evacuated from their flooded homes. He says a man was killed by floods in Ha Tinh province and three others were reported missing.

Meanwhile, the National Floods and Storms Control Committee said on Monday that one person had been reported dead in each of the neighbouring provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Tri.

The committee says on its website that up to 23 inches (60 centimetres) of heavy rain fell in the region from Friday to Sunday.

Vietnam is prone to floods and storms which kill hundreds of people each year.
