Authorities say floods in southern Brazil have forced more than 20,000 people to leave their homes.

Civil defence officials say nearly 12,000 people have been affected in Santa Catarina state, while about 9,000 have left flooded homes in neighbouring Parana state.

A statement issued on Monday by the Parana state civil defence department says that two people died on a landslide triggered by the rains. One person remains missing.

Heavy rains have been hitting the region since Thursday.
