The death toll from heavy rainstorms and flooding in southern China rose to 88 on Saturday, with 48 more reported missing, according to local authorities.
More than nine-million people were affected by the flooding, with direct economic costs estimated at 10 billion yuan (1.46 billion dollars), the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced on Saturday.
Around 750,000 people had been displace by the storms, the ministry said.
Images in local media showed rescue workers carrying elderly residents through flooded streets.
Landslides and flash floods destroyed cropland, and damaged about 100,000 houses, the state—run Xinhua news agency said.
The Central Meteorological Bureau predicted more heavy rainfall for the southern provinces, many of which have already suffered through nine big storms since the start of the rainy season.
Rescue officials were working in flood ravaged areas including the provinces of Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangxi.
