Published reports say a roadside bomb explosion in northeastern Algeria has killed five soldiers and injured five others.

Daily El Watan reported on Saturday that the bomb was set off by remote control a day earlier as a military convoy passed near the town of El Kennar, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of the city of Jijel.

Officials did not confirm the bombing, also reported by Arabic daily Echourouk. There was no immediately claim of responsibility.

Al—Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has often been blamed for sporadic attacks in Algeria in recent years. The group was born of a former Islamic radical group active in Algeria’s insurgency that peaked in the 1990s and left more than 200,000 people dead.
