A suicide bomber struck in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Sunday, killing at least five people and leaving over 30 injured close to an Imambargah in Muzaffarabad, where members of the Shia community had gathered for the traditional Muharram mourning.

Police officials told journalists in Muzaffarabad that the bomber was walking in a small procession of mourners, who were slowly making their way towards the Imambargah.

The Combined Military Hospital run by the Pakistan military is on the same road, yards away from the Markazi Imambargah.

Extra security

There was extra security on the road on account of Muharram. Policemen at a security barrier between the hospital and the Imambargah were checking the processionists when the bomber is said to have detonated the explosives strapped to his body.

Both policemen and civilians were among the killed and injured.

This is the second suicide attack in PoK. Earlier this year, a suicide attack at an Army checkpost killed three soldiers.

The attack was claimed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

On Saturday, a car bomb explosion in Karachi left 20 people wounded.
