One woman was killed and 12 others, all supporters of the Finance Minister and United National Party candidate in Colombo electoral district, Ravi Karunanayake, were injured on Friday when a group of unidentified persons fired at them on Bloemendhal Road in the northern part of the city.

The firing took place around 11-30 a.m. when the supporters of the Minister were campaigning for him.

The persons, who came in two cars, had apparently fled the place. The office of the Police Spokesperson said no arrest had been made so far.  The deceased person was aged 42 year old who was a resident of Madampitiya in Colombo. The injured were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, the police said.

An official attached to the Finance Minister's office said the area in and around the Road, with a high density of the population, had a large number of the poor.

He added that the shooting took place after the Minister left the place.
