A fire broke out on Sunday evening at an ammunition unit of the Kosgama army camp, about 45 km from here, following an explosion.

Police and Army officials received the first report about the fire around 5-30 p.m. So far, no causalities were reported. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

“At present, all our attention is on dousing the fire,” J.K. Jayaweera, spokesperson of the Sri Lanka Army, told The Hindu on Sunday night, adding that the Commander of the SLA, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, was coordinating the operations.

In view of the location of the camp along the Colombo-Avissawella road, traffic was temporarily suspended and steps were on to evacuate people living in nearby areas. The Commander was quoted by local media as saying that tri-forces had taken steps to ensure that the fire did not spread.
