The European Union says the government in Tripoli is urging the U.N. to send an independent mission to Libya to investigate the violence.
A senior EU official who returned from Tripoli late Monday said top officials of the Libyan foreign ministry had repeatedly made the point during their meetings.
The Libyans said they would allow the mission free travel throughout the nation, and would provide security for its members.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to standing rules, said on Tuesday the eight remaining ambassadors from EU nations also called for an independent visit.
The European Union’s position is that the Qadhafi regime must relinquish power “in an orderly fashion.”
