Iran’s top leader says the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia are a sign of “Islamic awareness” in the region.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said during Friday prayers that people are witnessing the reverberations of Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution.

Mr. Khamenei says of the current unrest that “this is what was always referred to as ... Islamic awareness in connection with Iran’s great Islamic Revolution.”

Since the start of the unrest in Egypt, Iran has portrayed the protests a replay of the Iranian revolution which toppled a pro—U.S. leader and brought hardline Islamists to power.
