Egypt crisis won't have direct impact on ASEAN region: Jakarta

February 06, 2011 11:12 pm | Updated October 08, 2016 06:41 pm IST - SINGAPORE:

Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority nation and Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, has said that the 10 ASEAN member-states, “as friends of the Egyptian people, call on all parties [in Egypt] to exercise maximum restraint”.

Foreign Minister George Yeo of Singapore, a key ASEAN country, said here on Sunday “there are bound to be some reverberations” elsewhere in the world. “But Southeast Asian society is very different from the Egyptian society and the Middle Eastern society. So, I don't see a direct impact upon the political dynamics in the [ASEAN] region,” said Mr. Yeo.
