The death toll rose to 18 after a landslide engulfed a primary school in south-western China’s Yunnan province, burying the children under rubble, state media said on Friday.

One adult remained missing and another was seriously injured after the landslide hit the Tiantou Primary School and two nearby homes early Thursday in Zhenhe village in Yiliang county.

The children were from another primary school that had been demolished after it was left in dangerous condition following earthquakes in Yiliang last month, Xinhua news agency said.

They had travelled to the Tiantou school on Thursday during a week-long national holiday to catch up on work missed because of the earthquakes, the agency quoted officials as saying.
