Dolar Amarshi Popat, who worked as a waiter after arriving in England from Uganda in 1971 and went on to a build a multi—million pound business empire, has been nominated by Prime Minister David Cameron to the House of Lords.
Mr. Popat has donated thousands of pounds to the Conservative party.
He founded the TLC Group, which owns a string of hotels and care homes across Britain.
Mr. Popat’s name is included in the list of peerages confirmed by Queen Elizabeth today.
The list includes senior Labour leader John Prescott.
Born in Uganda, Popat, 55, was 17 years old when his family was forced to flee Idi Amin’s regime.
He arrived in England in 1971, with just 10 pounds in his pocket.
Mr. Popat worked as a waiter at a Wimpy restaurant during the day to fund his business studies classes at night.
He became an accountant and went on to form a company that advised small companies on how to raise capital.
His fortunes grew when he founded the TLC Group.
Mr. Popat has reportedly financed the work of leading Conservative leaders such as Baroness Warsi, Nick Herbert, and Shailesh Vara.
