The U.N. refugee agency has given its annual Nansen Refugee Award to photojournalist Alixandra Fazzina for her work documenting the rarely seen consequences of war.
U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres praised Fazzina’s “fearless” efforts to portray the suffering of refugees and uprooted people.
British—born Ms. Fazzina has worked in Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. She is currently based in Pakistan.
The Award announced on Friday is named after the Norwegian arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen. In 1921 he became the first High Commissioner for Refugees for the League of Nations, the U.N.’s predecessor.
The award consists of a US $100,000 grant in support of a refugee—related cause of the winner’s choice.
