Brazil's Supreme Court rejects motion to block impeachment

In a blow to Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, the country’s Supreme Court has rejected a motion seeking to block an impeachment vote against her in Congress’ lower house.

It was another defeat for the embattled leader, who has lost support of key allies this week and is now even closer to a first major defeat in the process.

Justices are still debating the question in the early hours of Friday, but the vote stands at 8-1 in favor of rejecting Rousseff’s claim that the procedures against her were “contaminated.”

One vote is left, and technically justices can change their votes until the final vote is cast.
