Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says the masterminds of the Moscow subway bombings must be “dragged out of the sewer” and that catching them is, if nothing else, a matter of pride for investigators.

Mr. Putin, who is thought to carry the most power in Russia, said on television on Tuesday that he is sure the organizers of Monday’s attacks, which killed 39 people, would be found.

Mr. Putin said, “We know that they are lying low, but it is already a matter of the pride of law enforcement agencies to drag them out of the sewer and into broad daylight.”

Officials allege the masterminds are in the country’s restive North Caucasus region.

Five victims remain in critical condition and more than 70 are still hospitalized after the twin suicide bombings.
