An official says a bomb has exploded on a passenger train near Myanmar’s capital, killing two people and injuring seven.
The public security official says the explosion occurred on Wednesday evening about 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of the capital Naypyitaw on the line to Mandalay. It appeared that none of the victims were foreigners. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to release information.
No one has taken responsibility for the blast and no suspects have been named.
Bombings are rare but not unknown in Myanmar, where pro—democracy activists and ethnic minority groups are at odds with the military—backed government. The government usually blames opposition militants for such blasts, but most remain shrouded in mystery.
