Iraqi police and health officials say two civilians have been killed in a bomb blast in an eastern Baghdad market.

A police officer said on Tuesday the bomb was hidden in a garbage heap in the open market of the capital’s Shiite—dominated Zafaraniya neighbourhood.

He said the midday explosion injured six others.

A doctor in the hospital that received the bodies confirmed the deaths.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information.

Insurgents often hide explosives like land mines or artillery shells in piles of garbage and detonate them remotely when security forces pass by.
